Flavours of Lake Garda

Lake fish, Alpine cheeses, olive oil and dishes that introduce you to the flavours of Garda.

Where the lake meets the mountains

Riva del Garda brings together Trentino’s Alpine cooking and the traditions of neighbouring Veneto and Lombardy. Finish a walk through the historic centre at a trattoria, or bring local ingredients back for a relaxed meal in your apartment.

Fish from the lake

Look for lavarello al forno, baked whitefish; bigoli con le aole, pasta with fish; and luccio in salsa, pike with sauce. Recipes and ingredients vary between restaurants. Our selection pairs lake fish with Lugana white wine.

Trentino specialities

Carne salada is beef cured with salt and spices, served in thin slices and often accompanied by beans. Broccolo di Torbole is another local speciality associated with winter.

Strangolapreti are bread-and-spinach dumplings, often served with butter and sage. Together, these dishes introduce the mountain side of Garda’s cuisine.

Cheese and wine

Vezzena and Puzzone di Moena are names to look for on a cheese board. The regional selection also includes Monte Veronese. Try cheese with polenta or speck; our selection also highlights Bardolino Chiaretto rosé.

Olive oil, polenta and risotto

Garda DOP olive oil is part of the area’s food story. Try it with simple dishes that let the oil’s flavour come through. For a heartier meal, our selection includes polenta carbonèra and risotto all’Amarone.

Something sweet

Zelten is a festive Trentino cake made with dried fruit and nuts. Markets and food shops offer another way to explore local flavours and pick up something for breakfast or dinner in your apartment. Availability varies with the season.

A turquoise lake, the lanes of Limone, mountain views, a waterfall and a hilltop castle: five different ways to spend a day away from Riva’s old town. We suggest choosing one main destination rather than trying to fit them all into a single outing.
